My Website Not Getting Approved: Why Adsense Rejected My Application?

We all know that Google Adsense is a popular platform to monetize a website or blog. However, not all new websites get approved for Google Adsense & many times bloggers have no clue on why their application is getting rejected from Adsense.

If you have just started a new website or blog & have never applied for Google Adsense, or in case your application process is not getting approval for Adsense, this article has got you covered.

I’ve listed some of the most important but basic things you need to keep in mind before you apply for the Google Adsense program.

This article is basically a curated version of the guidelines & resources published by the Google Adsense team to help website owners understand the basic eligibility for Adsense & how to make your site Adsense ready.

What is Google Adsense & Why Do They Need to Review Your Website Before Granting You Approval?

Google Adsense is a program run by Google to help website owners monetize their website by displaying advertisements. These advertisements are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google & website owners just need to place the code snippet on their website – where they want to get the ads displayed.

The application approval process for Adsense is manually done by the Google team & there are certain guidelines that you as a website owner needs to follow before your website becomes eligible for advertisements (by Adsense).

These policies & guidelines by the Google Adsense team are in place to ensure a good advertisement experience & campaign performance for advertisers.

For instance, an advertiser would not want their ads to be displayed on a website that is of poor quality, has low-quality content, and endorse drug use or display sexually explicit pictures – and so, such websites are against Google Adsense policies.

Please Note: “Content” of your website includes everything from Affiliate advertisements, banner advertising to any kind of campaign running on your Website.

How to Get Your Website Approved For Google Adsense

Have Enough Content Copies For Adsense Team to Review

Before you apply for the Adsense partner program, it is recommended to have at least 15 posts on your blog – and not to mention, the article copies must be unique & your original work.

We do not allow monetization where there is no content. No content includes placeholder content for sites or apps under construction. Your content must be high-quality, original, and attract an audience.

– Google Adsense Policies for Minimum Content Requirements

In many cases, new bloggers reportedly shared that their website wasn’t getting approved for Adsense because there weren’t enough articles on the website.

So it is important to have enough content on your website that the Google team can review it. Not to mention, the quality team checks your content against plagiarism, grammatical errors, and other factors – so avoid poorly written & copied content at any cost

Don’t Forget to be Transparent of Privacy Policies with Website Visitors

We are living in a tech era & adapted to digital technology – that follows no boundaries when it comes to privacy – and so it is important that every website or digital product we use today should address the users’ privacy concerns & be transparent about what data they are collecting from us.

Being transparent about the data that digital products like applications & websites collect from consumers has become mandatory & following this concern, Google Adsense has made it a pre-requisite for websites to have a privacy policy page – displayed clearly to the website visitors.

So if you are yet to create a privacy policy page for your new website – just do it – not only for Google Adsense but also to comply with the laws.

It is also recommended to have a contact us & about us page as the absence of these pages may also result in the rejection of your Google Adsense application.

Avoid Restricted Content & Categories

There are certain types of content categories that Google Adsense restricts & won’t allow monetization for. You need to be careful of that.

According to the Google Adsense Publisher Policies, monetization is not allowed for content that

  • is illegal, promotes illegal activity, or infringes on the legal rights of others.
  • Infringes copyright
  • sells or promotes the sale of counterfeit products. Counterfeit goods contain a trademark or logo that is identical to or substantially indistinguishable from the trademark of another. They mimic the brand features of the product in an attempt to pass themselves off as a genuine product of the brand owner.
  • Promotes the sale of products obtained from endangered or threatened species. Examples: Sale of tigers, shark fins, elephant ivory, tiger skins, rhino horn, dolphin oil
  • incites hatred against, promotes discrimination of, or disparages an individual or group on the basis of their race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or other characteristic that is associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization. Examples: Promoting hate groups or hate group paraphernalia, encouraging others to believe that a person or group is inhuman, inferior, or worthy of being hated
  • harasses, intimidates, or bullies an individual or group of individuals. Examples: Singling out someone for abuse or harassment, suggesting a tragic event did not happen or that victims or their families are actors or complicit in a cover-up of the event
  • threatens or advocates for physical or mental harm to oneself or others.
  • relates to a current, major health crisis and contradicts authoritative, scientific consensus.
  • exploits others through extortion. Examples: Predatory removals, revenge porn, blackmail
  • promotes any form of hacking or cracking and/or provides users with instructions, equipment, or software that tampers with or provides unauthorized access to devices, software, servers, or websites.
  • enables a user, or promotes products and services that enable a user, to track or monitor another person or their activities without their authorization.
  • contains malicious software or “malware” that may harm or gain unauthorized access to a computer, device, or network.
  • includes graphic sexual text, image, audio, video, or games.
  • contains non-consensual sexual themes, whether simulated or real.
  • may be interpreted as promoting a sexual act in exchange for compensation.
  • is made to appear appropriate for a family audience, but contains adult themes including sex, violence, or other depictions of children or popular children’s characters that are unsuitable for a general audience.
  • Sexually exploits or abuses children or content that promotes the sexual exploitation or abuse of children. This includes all child sexual abuse materials.

NOTE: You can still place AdSense code on pages with prohibited content that is in the scope of the Google Publisher Restrictions, though this content will likely receive less advertising than other, non-restricted content.

Site Behaviour: Avoid Any Black Hat or Unethical Marketing Practice

Google Adsense is strict against websites that follow black hat marketing or similar practices. Black hat marketing practices are basically tactics to tricks or manipulate users or search engines.

Below are some practices that are not considered ethical:

  • Redirecting users to unwanted, irrelevant or misleading websites/webpages
  • False claims of streaming content, or downloads
  • Initiating downloads without clearly informing
  • Website content that include malware
  • Popups: Irrelevant popups, popups that does not have an exit button, popups that interfere with site alignment or navigation
  • Other types of navigation that is designed to intentionally mislead users
  • Pages where ads are implemented in placements that are intuitively meant for navigation.
  • Browser History Manipulation: preventing the normal function of the “Back” button by keeping the user from returning to the previous destination

Your Blog Needs to Be At Least 6 Months Old

In order to sustain a healthy digital advertising ecosystem, Google introduced a policy that requires a website to be active for at least 6 months before Adsense approval can be granted.

This policy is applicable to certain countries only, including India & others where fraudulent & malicious activities are carried out in larger numbers.

One reason for the introduction of this regulation is the increase in poor quality websites because most of the students think that they can get rich quickly using a blog & Adsense.

This policy that requires a blog to be at least 6 months old has been introduced more than 2 years back & the intention is clear – to prevent abuse.

In some locations, including China and India, we require publishers to have owned their sites for 6 months. We’ve taken this step to ensure the quality of our advertising network and protect the interests of our advertisers and existing publishers.

Google Adsense Team

You Must Be Above 18 Years in Age

It is mentioned in Google Adsense’s terms & policies that the eligible partner must need to be 18 years or older.

Publishers must be at least 18 years of age to participate in the AdSense Program. If you are not yet 18, you may have a parent or guardian sign up for AdSense using their own Google Account. If their AdSense account is approved, we will make all payments to the adult responsible for the site.

Google Adsense Policy for Age Requirements

Traffic Required For Adsense Approval

Although there are not any minimum content requirements guidelines mentioned in the official Adsense documentation, many bloggers have witnessed that their website was getting rejected unless they got at least 100 – 200 organic visits a month.

Years ago, the Adsense approval process was easy, but with the growth in the number of websites globally – they are strict with picking & approving websites.

With that being said, there is no point in getting approval on websites that don’t bring in a decent amount of traffic monthly – you’re not going to make it work.

In A Nutshell

The Google Adsense team is pretty strict about the account approval process & the team manually reviews each website before approving it for Adsense. In a nutshell, below are some requirements to keep in mind to comply with Google Adsense policies & get approved on their network:

  • Improve you website design & have a clear navigation
  • Have at least 15 unique & original articles on your blog before applying to Adsense
  • Have an About Us, Contact Us & Privacy Policy Page on your Website
  • Your website needs to be at least 6 months old
  • Sign up for a parental account if you’re below 18 years of age
  • Do not put content on your website that seems prohibited. Example, sexually explicit materials, adult content, illegal drugs, illegal activities like terrorism, child pornoghraphy etc.
  • Avoid any black hat or unethical marketing practice on your website that seems spammy or manipulate visitors

Other Google Adsense policy requirements you should know before applying:

  • Google Adsense does not seems to be approving website that does not get organic traffic & runs solely on paid advertisements. Although the policy does not seems to be very clear. You should dig down deeper if you’re running paid ads to your website for traffic
  • Unethical traffic sources
  • Google AdSense isn’t available to publishers in the following countries or territories:
    • Crimea
    • Cuba
    • Iran
    • North Korea
    • Syria
  • Your website language must fall under the supported languages for Adsense. You can view the list of supported languages for Adsense here.

Typical Google Adsense Account Approval Process:

  1. Once your website is compatible with Google Adsense policies, sign up for an Adsense account
  2. Login to your Adsense account & add the adsense code to your Website
  3. Verify if the code has been placed properly & wait for 1-2 weeks
  4. The Google Adsense team will manually review your website & mark it as “approved” or “rejected”

Don’t rely completely on Google Adsense, here are a few other popular advertisement networks you can try as an alternative:

  1. Media.net: Powered by Yahoo Bing network, Media.net is the #1 alternative to Adsense
  2. Bidvertiser
  3. Infolinks

Some Frequently Asked Questions about Google Adsense Approval Eligibility

To be honest – your website cannot survive without it. One powerful feature of Google Search Console is that it helps you analyze the keywords (known as queries) for which your website can potentially rank.

Basically, what happens is when Google bots crawl your website & index (save) your webpage at their database, they categorize & put your webpage based on a lot of factors/scores (algorithms), one such process is categorizing your webpage for some set of keywords (queries)

Since there are billions of web pages across the Internet & billions of people looking for information, Google bots, while crawling your page, try to analyze your content & compare it with the queries people use on Google Search (keyword)

The search queries that match your content is saved in Google’s database and a small chunk of this data is shown to you on Search Console – so that you can make informed changes on your website.

This includes the databases you’ve created till now, you need to expand the table & find the database that you’re using for the WordPress website (of which the password is lost & you want to reset it).

To get to the username & password files of your WordPress website, we need to locate the website database first. Database name hierarchy are available at the left sidebar

How do I know which database is associated with which WordPress Website?

Considering the above example, the database names are in alphanumeric patterns which is hard to differentiate & recognize. This happens when we do not rename the default database name at the time of WordPress installation. To find out which is the database for what website, simply expand the table & analyze the file names. For example, if you see a file name with “WooCommerce” in it, that indicates this database is associated with your WooCommerce Website.

Coming to the point, what we are looking here is for a database file that stores registered users’ information. This file would have the term “users” in it.

See screenshot below:

Inside of your website database folder, you need to find wp_users or similar file that includes the registered user details - including the password

Step 4: Reset password by editing the user details

Once you locate the user’s file, you will see a list of registered users. Locate the user you want to change the password of & click on edit.

See screenshot below:

The user_pass that you see here is the password in an encrypted format. We need to put our new password here & save it.

Before changing the password, make sure the function is set to “MD5” as shown in the screenshot below

from the dropdown cell in column user_pass, select function as MD5 and type your new password & save.

Once you save it. Your password is reset & now you’re good to go.
